A couple of Doctor Who broadcast developments this week:
Prime TV http://www.primetv.co.nz in New Zealand has picked up the new Doctor Who series to premiere in the "first quarter" of 2005. Here is the press release, with one paragraph excised that contains mild spoilers: http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/BU0412/S00076.htm `New Doctor Who series licensed to Prime Television

BBC Worldwide announced today the license of the new series of the cult classic Doctor Who to Prime Television New Zealand. Only the second international deal to be finalised, the new series will deliver to Prime Television in the first quarter of 2005.

Starring Christopher Eccleston (The Second Coming, Cracker, Elizabeth) and Bille Piper (Canterbury Tales) and written by a team led by Russell T Davies (Queer As Folk) the series sees Doctor Who, the alien loner and his companion Rose forge a friendship across time and space. Fans out there should brace themselves for some exhilarating experiences and deadly confrontations.

(Paragraph excised)

It has been over 40 years since Doctor Who hit our screens and sparked a fan base that spans the world. International conventions, fan clubs with members numbering in the thousands and books, videos, DVDs and merchandise are just part of the on-going phenomenon that is Doctor Who.

David Vine, BBC Worldwide Managing Director Asia Pacific, says, "This series has been long anticipated. We are very excited that Prime will bring the new Doctor to New Zealand audiences. If you are a long-time Doctor Who fan you won't be disappointed but equally if you are someone who has never heard of a Tardis or a Time Lord you will be able to climb on board and travel through time and space for the first time. Prepare for brand-new, spell-binding adventures."

Prime's Programming Manager Andrew Shaw says, "I am delighted to have acquired this fantastic new drama from the BBC. Doctor Who promises to be an outstanding series.

"We very much look forward to placing it in our primetime schedule. This series will captivate a whole new generation of fans who have never experienced the legend that is Doctor Who."

Longtime readers of this column may remember that Prime aired Doctor Who in 2000 and 2001, showing all of the complete stories from An Unearthly Child through The Horns Of Nimon. Several of the stories had never aired before in New Zealand. The entire broadcast history of Doctor Who in New Zealand is chronicled on the Tetrap web site http://nzdwfc.tetrap.com .

As of the time this column went out, there was an unconfirmed report that Prime had picked up the rights to repeat the original series again when they got the rights to the new episodes. We'll see.
A teaser for the series is now at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho . It is a 27 second presentation
originally shown to the media as part of an overall description of
upcoming BBC shows. Requires RealPlayer to listen to. It was not
aimed at the general public, but if you want to hear the Doctor and
Rose in character for the first time, and see the new logo run
across the screen, it is available.
http://www.bbc.tv/drama/coming_up.shtml has an updated list of
dramas commissioned for the BBC, including Doctor Who, giving the
official information on when shows are coming, including month of
premiere when known. Doctor Who is currently noted as Winter 2005,
with no specified month. It is likely that when a final decision is
made on when the show will premiere, a specific month would appear
for Doctor Who on that page.
